Reflections From the Quran, 25th June 2023.
This week session we go through a significant event in the life of prophet Yusuf shared by Ustaz Jakfar Embek from Singapore. An event told by Allah in verses 23-34 of Surah Yusuf recount the incident where the wife of the Egyptian ruler attempts to seduce prophet Yusuf. This episode illustrates the strength of Prophet Yusuf’s character, highlighting the importance of maintaining moral integrity and resisting immoral temptations, regardless of the circumstances.
From this incident, we reflect that any slanderous or malicious allegation needs to be proven. Prophet Yusuf as a person being the subject of the charge is considered innocent until proven guilty. Luckily for him, a member of the house gave his opinion on the case stating that they can look at the side of the shirt’s torn for a clue. That is how Allah saved Yusuf from this slanderous accusation. Later, it is mentioned that Yusuf being locked up in prison. Yusuf said it is more to his liking and if Allah not evade him away from their plan he might inclined towards them. Ustaz Jakfar explained, to have certain inclination or liking is natural for any human and certainly not the same reciprocating to join or tempted with them. as a servant of Allah S.W.T, we need to invoke Allah’s help and always maintain relationship with group of pious environment to avoid the temptation to do ma’siyah.
Another angle from the presenter was, for an Islamic worker or organisation who champion Islamic ideas or inclined to Islamic party, they need to have the same ethics or discipline meaning that did not make malicious allegations or slanderous accusations to others and not within same gang/party without clear evidence. It it what was defined as “al-Kadzibiin”. Back to the principles of ethics of proof before judge, to preach not to judge. دعاة ليس قضاة.
It is also highly important for organizational perspective to manage perception risk against slander or accusations. Yusuf prepared to make public perception to dakwah high and clean. He realised that he represent dakwah so he needs to make sure the image of the organisation not smeared by the challenges he faced. From maqasid shariah perspective, the fight to prove him innocent can be classify as a preservation or putting a front to protect lineage, integrity and dignity that need to be preserve.
In conclusion, this chapter remind us to remain steadfast in our faith, uphold moral integrity, and trust in Allah’s plan, knowing that trials and tribulations are part of a greater purpose. By reflecting on these lessons, we can draw inspiration and guidance in navigating the challenges of our own lives, seeking Allah’s mercy and guidance every step of the way.
